Powerful Protest: How does language enhance activism?
On Thursday 10th June, our Senior Research Fellow Dr Arlene Holmes-Henderson chaired a panel of experts as part of the inaugural Sussex Festival of Ideas.
Dr Kim Lasky, Research Associate at the University of Sussex and a poet with an interest in ecology and science digs deep into the language that makes protest work.
Katja Mäkinen of the University of Jyväskylä in Finland reports back on the pioneering DIALLS Project that created a cross-Europe Cultural Literacy programme now used in seven countries.
Team member Dr Arlene Holmes-Henderson has recently been involved in a landmark report on the provision of oracy education in the UK, published by the 'Oracy All Party Parliamentary Group'.
Speaking Citizens is hosting a special session as part of the Sussex Festival of Ideas on 10th June, 11. 30am on the role of language and rhetoric in contemporary protest movements.
